Jason Shupp - Founder of BoardEase Advisors
About Jason
Jason Shupp is a business owner, podcast host, speaker, author, and empathic collaborator. His early professional path was unusually diverse—spanning roles as an EMT in Colorado, whitewater raft guide, snowmobile tour guide, martial arts instructor, and high-works rigger—before he entered his family's third-generation business. After nearly two decades leading a legacy company, a strategic partnership enabled Jason to expand his focus into multimedia, storytelling, and new entrepreneurial ventures.
Jason is the founder of BoardEase Advisors, where he helps small businesses design, establish, and facilitate Advisory Boards that support CEOs with clarity, structure, and confidence. He also hosts a podcast centered on the origin stories of unconventional experts, using the platform to surface nuance, context, and deeper understanding around people and ideas. Outside of his professional work, Jason is a devoted husband and father who prioritizes wellness, travel, and rigorous outdoor play.
My Story: Why Advisory Boards Matter
With the beginning of my tenure for my family business, we had an Advisory Board. When one of our Advisors unexpectedly passed away, the momentum of that Board went with him. I went many years without reconvening it. I continued to seek guidance from advisors such as my banker and accountant, industry peers, and consultants. I was also a long-time participant in a peer group. I told myself I had the support I needed.
Whenever the motivation for an Advisory Board reboot came about, I simply couldn't (or wouldn't) clear my schedule to dedicate ample time to putting one together. It wasn't until catastrophic circumstances forced me into action. The next iteration of our Advisory Board was a lynchpin for the business to navigate through those challenges. Unfortunately, a little too late.
This was the catalyst to serve other CEO's and business owners. I truly believe Advisory Boards are a unique mechanism to support CEO's. It is guidance through empathy, expertise, and experience; rather than advice and ideology. My ethos of lightening the lift stems from my belief that action truly is more meaningful than words. I believe I can be of better service if I help with the lift for a sustained period of time, while a client can have the recovery / assistance / perspective to learn to carry said load on their own in the future. In my experience, most people (including business owners and CEO's), do not struggle as much with what to do; rather having the ability/mindset to execute and implement.
The Pack Analogy
A common analogy I use is we all carry a pack in life, and that pack has stones in it (marriage, parenting, work stress, health, goals, business objectives, financial uncertainty). One person can say "If you work out more and strengthen your legs and back, the pack will be easier to carry. And here is a recommended work-out I can sell you. I'll cheer you on from the sidelines." I would rather take a stone out and say "The pack should be a little lighter now. Ideally you feel better so we can get that work-out in to help you get stronger. I will give you some structure and support during your training and hold onto this stone for a bit until you are ready to put back in your pack."
